Workrate Hockey - July 29, 2025
We talk about some minor signings, some terminology, and a dead wrestler. It's slow.
Starting a hockey-based newsletter in mid-July, possibly the deadest time in hockey, was a choice, but if we don't keep moving forward, we end up backward, and we must continue upward, not forward, and - of course - always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.
I was serious about too many Simpsons references.
It generally means talking about the minutiae of hockey, such as the signings of players such as Skyler Brind'Amour and Dom Fensore to one-year, two-way contracts. These were contracts that were going to get signed - both El Hijo Del Brind'Amour and Fensore are restricted free agents that played well with the AHL Chicago Wolves last season, even getting a couple of NHL games at the end of the season, and will be important parts of the Wolves roster next season. Similarly, the Canes signed restricted free agents Noel Gunler and recently acquired Cayden Primeau as well earlier this month, with Gunler signing a one-year two-way deal and Primeau signing a one-year, one-way deal, and on Tuesday the last two Hurricanes restricted free agents, Ryan Suzuki and Ronan Seeley, signed one-year, two-way contracts. There's a lot of misconceptions regarding these minor types of deals, so a few quick clear-ups.
